new music

Alright. I just watched a JC Penney commercial with a Regina Spektor song I already own in it. Now I can't decide if this makes me feel old and lame or if I have just become the kind of person who only listens to music used in commercials. I'd like to believe that going commercial is one of the few ways left for musicians to be heard and to move out from under the thumb of big recording studios. But my other side is yelling "sell out!". But everyone needs to pay the bills and if that is the way to do so, maybe I just need to stop watching so much television, or start making enough money to get a DVR so that I never need to watch commercials again. I think the big answer is that I need to think about all of this a lot less and just go on living and enjoying music without thinking so hard about it. Now I am going to go beg Michael to let me use his itunes gift card to get that Feist song from the new nano commercial and the Ingrid Michaelson so about the sweater from the Old Navy commercial. I am old, and if I didn't have commercials and tv shows to show me new music I would only have KCRW and so much of that is "whatever world music was trendy that day" --from High Fidelity
